ANSYS, now part of Synopsys, has released Ansys FreeFlow 2026 R1 is a smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulation software for single-phase free-surface flows.

With the 2026 R1 release, Ansys FreeFlow continues to expand its capabilities for high-fidelity free-surface fluid simulations. New adaptive SPH technology, improved physics models, enhanced multiphysics integration, and performance optimizations allow users to simulate increasingly complex fluid behaviors with greater efficiency. These advancements help engineers gain deeper insights into fluid dynamics and accelerate innovation across a wide range of applications.
What's new in Ansys FreeFlow 2026 R1
Ansys FreeFlow 2026 R1 features Adaptive Element Size, enhancing performance and accuracy in fluid flow simulations. Furthermore, new multiphysics couplings enhance visualization and analysis across complex workflows.
SPH Simulation
A new implementation for time-periodic control in SPH fluid inlets has been introduced. Additionally, an implicit calculation for viscous forces applicable to both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids has been implemented. And the flat plate heat transfer coefficient (HTC) correlation will now be calculated internally by the FreeFlow solver.
Multiphysics Coupling
A new enhanced version of the integration between FreeFlow and Ansys optiSLang and post-processing using Ansys EnSight.
Performance and Usability
Adaptive SPH Element Size, reducing overall particle count and speeding up simulations. Extend SPH Flowmeters: Measures the average of velocity (or temperature) of the flow over a given surface.

Ansys FreeFlowis a general-purpose smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) software used to simulate single-phase free-surface flows, offering two different solver approaches: an implicit incompressible and a weakly compressible. FreeFlow provides a modern, user-friendly interface streamlining the SPH process from pre- to post-processing within a single window workflow. And its powerful GPU-based solver manages large-scale simulations featuring millions of SPH elements efficiently. Although FreeFlow software is one of the newest solutions in the Ansys-Synopsys portfolio, it continues to evolve rapidly, introducing innovations and enhancements with every release.
Ansys FreeFlow and EnSight: Visualizing Heat Transfer in a Stirred Tank
This video showcases the simulation and visualization of heat transfer in a stirred tank using Ansys FreeFlow and Ansys EnSight. FreeFlow's Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) solver is used to model hot water mixing and cooling against chilled tank walls, while EnSight provides powerful post-processing and visualization capabilities for analyzing temperature fields and flow dynamics.
