This course provides a comprehensive introduction to carbon accounting, focusing on the systematic measurement, analysis, and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It equips students with the conceptual and quantitative tools required to estimate emissions at both organizational and product levels, using internationally recognized frameworks such as the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064/14067 standards, and IPCC guidelines. The course covers emission source identification, classification of emissions into Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3, and application of appropriate emission factors for accurate carbon footprint calculations.Students will gain practical exposure to emission calculation methodologies, life cycle assessment (LCA) for carbon accounting, and preparation of carbon inventories and reports. Emphasis is placed on data quality, system boundary definition, functional units, and interpretation of results. The course also introduces carbon mitigation strategies, including energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and carbon offset mechanisms, along with an overview of carbon pricing instruments and emerging carbon markets. Through numerical problems, case studies, and a mini project, students develop the ability to critically evaluate sustainability claims and support ESG reporting and climate-related decision-making in industry and policy contexts.Overall, the course prepares learners to apply carbon accounting principles confidently in real-world sustainability, policy, and industrial decision-making contexts.
