Woman is the first solo album by British musician Mike McGear (spelled Michael on the cover), brother of former-Beatle Paul McCartney, who also co-wrote a song, but is credited as a "friend". Roger McGough produced and co-wrote some songs with McGear. The cover is a black-and-white photo of McGear/McCartney's mother.
This LP has been sitting on my LP shelf for the better part of 35 years, virtually untouched. As I was a big Beatles fan, of course I had to pick this up as an import, I'm thinking around 1975. I did give it a spin then and it sure wasn't anything like his famous brother, so I put it back on the shelf and really forgot about it. These days I'm digging through all my old LPs, reassessing them, and transferring to digital those that "make the grade." I looked at this one, and thought "why not give it a spin?" I was actually pleasantly surprised. It has a certain quality that I found very appealing. The arrangements and production is sparse and effective, the playing is topnotch, and the singing fits the songs in an odd sort of way. These songs work in this context. Considering this was a self-produced first effort, it holds up surprisingly well. The musicianship, featuring Brian Auger and Zoot Money, is really fine. Once you adjust to the fact that McGear's voice is more a tool than a feature, it's really a fine listen. A couple of songs go on a bit, and are not that strong, but as a whole this is an impressive debut.
