“100 Hits - Ladies Night” is a 5‑CD music compilation released on November 21, 2011, by the British label Demon Music Group (DMG) under the catalogue number DMG 100 089. The release was part of the popular UK budget series of multi‑disc box sets “100 Hits”.
Main concept
Despite the title, which alludes to the famous track by Kool & The Gang, a compilation dedicated not only to classc disco or R&B. Its main idea is “female vocals” and tracks popular at women’s parties. The compilation covers several decades of popular music (from the 1960s to the late 2000s) and brings together completely different genres: pop music, R&B, soul, Europop, new wave, and even Brit‑pop.
At the same time, although the focus is on female performers (from Lily Allen and Kylie Minogue to Shirley Bassey and Sinead O’Connor), the tracklist also includes male groups (for example, Blue, Simon Webbe, or MC Hammer), whose songs are traditionally considered hits on dance floors and in karaoke.
Musical content by disc
Each of the five discs contains exactly 20 tracks:
• CD1 and CD2: Focus mainly on more modern pop music, eurodance, R&B, and Britpop from the late 90s and 2000s. This collection features such prominent representatives of the era as Atomic Kitten, Lily Allen, Kelis, All Saints, Melanie C, Jamelia, and Sugababes.
• CD3 and CD4: Take the listener back to the retro era. This includes hits from the golden era of pop music, rock and roll, and soul from the 1960s and 1970s (Helen Shapiro, Cilla Black, Lulu, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Cher). It also features classics of the new wave and synth‑pop of the 1980s (The Human League, Blondie, Kim Wilde, Katrina And The Waves).
• CD5: It is a mix of powerful vocal ballads, classc soul, 90s pop music, and solo artists from different eras (Shirley Bassey, Dionne Warwick, Eternal, Sinead O’Connor, Wilson Phillips).
Features of the release
• Versatility: The collection is perfectly balanced for those who love British pop music and global radio hits. It combines light teenage pop with timeless vocal classics of the level of Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger”.
• Original tracks and authors: One of the pleasant details in the booklet is the detailed listing of the original publishing rights, labels, song authors, and exact copyright years (P), which is valuable for collectors and music history enthusiasts.
