What you'll learn
Identify and form the subjunctive mood in its principal tenses and conjugations.
Explain and distinguish the major uses of the subjunctive in Ecclesiastical Latin, including its use in independent and dependent clauses.
Analyze the grammatical structure of increasingly complex Latin sentences containing subjunctive constructions.
Apply knowledge of the subjunctive to conduct a detailed grammatical and syntactical analysis of Veni Creator Spiritus
Requirements
Content studied before this course: nouns, adjectives, the latin case system, prepositions, pronouns, selected irregular verbs, regular verbs in the indicative mood active and passive voices, and the verb sum. A basic understanding of the Latin language is expected.
Description
Ecclesiastical Latin V focuses on the subjunctive mood and concludes with a detailed translation and analysis of the Veni Creator Spiritus. The course begins with a review of the Latin grammar necessary for understanding the subjunctive, including the characteristics of verbs, tense, voice, conjugation, and the indicative mood. We will then study the formation of the four principal subjunctive tenses in both the active and passive voices, working through the conjugations systematically to establish the complete subjunctive paradigm.Particular attention will be given to recognizing subjunctive forms and beginning to understand their function and meaning within a sentence. Students will encounter the principal ways in which the subjunctive can be understood in Ecclesiastical Latin, while also learning an important principle of Latin interpretation: the precise force of the subjunctive often depends upon its grammatical context. More advanced treatment of subjunctive syntax, including sequence of tenses and the interpretation of complex subordinate clauses, will be developed in Ecclesiastical Latin VI.As we progress through the course, we will apply these principles to Ecclesiastical Latin and to the language of prayer. The course culminates in a careful analysis of the Veni Creator Spiritus. We will work through the hymn in Latin, examining its vocabulary, morphology, syntax, and use of the subjunctive, and then translate it into English. Through this analysis, students will see the subjunctive functioning in an authentic work of Ecclesiastical Latin and gain greater confidence in reading and understanding Latin prayers and hymns in their original language. The purpose of the course is not simply to recognize subjunctive forms, but to establish a firm understanding of the subjunctive as a grammatical system and to begin applying that understanding when reading and translating authentic Ecclesiastical Latin.
This course is for students who have completed the foundational study of Ecclesiastical Latin and are ready to explore the subjunctive mood and more advanced Latin grammar. It is especially suited for anyone interested in Catholic prayer, Scripture, liturgy, theology, and the Latin language, and who wants to develop the skills necessary to analyze authentic ecclesiastical texts such as Veni Creator Spiritus
