Requirements
Basic Physics - GCSE level
Basic Biology - GCSE level
Description
Cancer is a disease that will affect 1 in 2 people during their lifetime according to the World Health Organisation. The field of Medical Physics is dedicated to coming up with ever more innovative ways to treat cancer. This makes it one of the most attractive career options in the health sector.Radiotherapy is the largest sub-discipline within Medical Physics and uses a range of techniques to treat cancer through the use of ionising radiation, delivered with sub-millimetre accuracy. This course is centred on Radiotherapy Machines, specifically on linear accelerators (Linacs). It covers a broad range of topics at an introductory level designed to expose the course student to the basics associated with what linacs are, how they are designed, how they are characterised in preparation for clinical use, how they are used to treat, and how they are maintained through routine quality assurance. Also, with radiation being potentially lethal if not used properly, ensuring safety in the clinical environment is a major concern. With this in mind, this course also introduces the student to the safety mechanisms and some of the procedures that Medical Physicists employ to ensure that patients, staff and members of the public remain safe when the linacs are in use. This course is structured so that it is suitable for beginner level aspiring medical physicists. It is also suitable for trainee medical physicists preparing for their exams. It can also be used as a refresher for experienced medical physicists, or indeed, the curious student with a GCSE level physics and biology knowledge.
Who this course is for
This course is well suited for anyone considering a career in medical physics, or anyone applying for an internship or training program in medical physics
It is also well suited to anyone simply curious about learning how radiation can be used to treat cancers
