Thoroughly understanding the organization's dynamic business niche requires constant observation, which occurs in the Observe Phase of the Business Cycle. Only through constant business niche observation can an organization gain an understanding of the internal reality of its business that matches the external reality of the business niche where it operates. Having that thorough understanding is the only way an organization can be successful.
The Business Observation Module provides the concepts, approach, definitions, and basic techniques for an organization to understand the dynamic business niche through routine observation. The module builds on previous modules that explain the data and processes resource cycles and the details of the business niche, and builds toward modules on interrogatives and frameworks, and architectures and models.
Business niche observation involves two scoping sequences. The first is to scope the business environment to the organization's business niche, and constantly adjust that business niche. The second is to scope the business niche components to the data and processes that may be relevant to the organization's business. Both scoping sequences are important, but the second sequence is the primary focus.
The data and processes scoping sequence begins with a discover phase that reviews business niche components - objects (including actors), events (including triggers and responses), relationships, rules, and their features - to identify raw data and processes that may be of interest. The understand phase wraps those raw data and processes with meaning to provide data and processes in context that are of interest. The chronicle phase documents those data and processes. The consensus phase combines multiple observations into preliminary data and processes that may be relevant.
The Data / Processes Resource Management series presents concepts, principles, and techniques, formal terms with denotative definitions, and the benefits of evolving to formal management of a combined data / processes resource. The series is beneficial for technical data and processes professionals, business professionals, and their respective managers.
