Discover Your Child's Impending Struggle In Secondary Maths & What Parents Can Do About It...
Algebra is the fundamental in the learning of Mathematics. In Singapore, students start learning formal algebra in primary 6. And relies on model drawing as one of the heuristics to solve word problem.
Model drawing is one of the most recognized features in the Singapore mathematics curriculum, which enable primary students (without access to the formal algebra) as a means to represent and solve algebraic word problems.
However, secondary-level Maths are heavily based on the use of algebraic equation. Many students have limited exposure until now and encounter a variety of challenges in adapting to formal algebra. This include the understanding of the letters used in formal algebra as well as translating text information into algebraic equations.
I will be sharing how the integration of Model with the Algebraic (relationship between the model method and algebraic method) to help the child to develop a strong foundation in algebraic manipulation. Though it is not the intention for students to rely on pictorial representation when doing algebra, model method serves as a good stating point for students to master algebraic manipulation meaningfully. Thus smoothly complete the transition from primary level to secondary level Maths.
