Requirements
❗ Completion of the RIPv2 module (this course builds directly on that foundation).
❗ Basic understanding of IPv6 addressing fundamentals.
❗ Access to lab tools - Packet Tracer, GNS3, devices with IPv6 unicast routing support.
❗ Roughly 4-6 hours available for the seven modules, plus 2-3 hours for the integrated four-router lab.
Description
This self-paced course teaches IPv6 routing using RIPng (RIP next generation), building on prior RIPv2 knowledge and basic IPv6 addressing. Across seven modules plus an integrated four-router lab, students learn what RIPng is and where it fits, including its RFC 2080 origins and how it compares to RIPv2 in terms of hop-count metric, split horizon, and timers, versus what changed, like UDP port, multicast addressing, and interface-based configuration.
Students then move into protocol mechanics (multicast updates, timers, and metric behavior), followed by hands-on base configuration: enabling IPv6 unicast routing, creating a RIPng process, and activating it per interface. From there, the course covers route control techniques such as manual summarization, default route origination, passive interfaces, and metric offsets, before teaching verification and troubleshooting using key show and debug commands.
A dedicated module addresses RIPng's lack of built-in authentication and what securing it actually requires, and the course closes by comparing RIPng against RIPv2, OSPFv3, and EIGRP for IPv6 for exam-readiness. The integrated lab ties every concept together on a single topology.
This is a self-paced module. Work through Modules 1-7 in order - each builds on the last. Every module ends with a Self-Check box; do not move on until you can answer those without looking back. The Integrated Lab at the end exercises every topic covered across all seven modules on a single four-router topology.
Who this course is for
⭐ CCNA 200-301 candidates studying the IP Connectivity - IPv6 Routing domain.
⭐ Networking students who've completed a RIPv2 module and want to extend that knowledge to IPv6.
⭐ Self-paced learners who prefer working through structured modules with self-check boxes before attempting a hands-on lab.
⭐ Anyone needing a low-complexity option for small networks, labs, or training environments where RIPng is a practical, appropriate protocol choice.
