Master GE EX2100e excitation control - hardware, AVR and limiters, ToolboxST, maintenance and troubleshooting
What you'll learn
⚡ Explain how a synchronous generator produces reactive power, and how the excitation system controls terminal voltage, VARs, and power factor.
⚡ Identify every major EX2100e cabinet, module, and circuit board - control, auxiliary, and power conversion - and explain what each one does.
⚡ Trace the control chain from AUTO REF through EXASP, AVR, and the manual regulator to the bridge firing command and thyristor gate pulses.
⚡ Explain how the OEL, UEL, stator current limiter, V/Hz limiter, and PSS protect the generator, and where each acts on the capability curve.
⚡ Distinguish simplex from redundant TMR configurations, and describe how the M1, M2, and C controllers vote, initialize, and take control.
⚡ Perform preventive maintenance and parts replacement safely, knowing which components can be changed online and which require a shutdown
⚡ Operate the EX2100e touchscreen interface and read machine condition, alarms, and diagnostics directly from the operator screens.
⚡ Apply a structured troubleshooting method to real EX2100e faults using alarm messages, diagnostic displays, and hardware verification checks.
Requirements
❗ Basic electrical fundamentals - voltage, current, AC and DC - are helpful but not essential.
❗ No prior excitation system experience required; generator and excitation fundamentals are built from the ground up.
❗ Familiarity with power plant or industrial rotating equipment is useful but not assumed.
❗ No software or equipment needed - just an interest in generator control systems.
DescriptionThe excitation system is the smallest cabinet lineup in the powerhouse and the one that trips the unit most often. Yet on most sites it is the least understood system on the floor - operators know which button raises VARs, and technicians know which board to swap, but very few people can trace a voltage command from the operator's raise pulse all the way to a thyristor gate pulse.
This course closes that gap for theGE EX2100e, the static excitation platform installed on GE gas turbine, steam turbine, and hydro generators worldwide.
It starts where it should - with the machine. Before touching the exciter, you will work through synchronous generator behaviour: how field current becomes reactive power, why the capability curve has the shape it does, and what actually limits a generator at each edge of that curve. Once that foundation is in place, the excitation fundamentals follow naturally, and the EX2100e stops looking like a black box.
From there the course goes deep into the equipment itself. You will walk through all three cabinets - control, auxiliary, and power conversion - module by module: the UCSx controllers, the ESYS, EAUX, EBRG, EDEX and EXAM boards, the thyristor bridges, the de-excitation and field flashing circuits, and the difference between a simplex control and a triple-redundant one. Then into the software, where the real control philosophy lives: the AUTO REF and EXASP setpoint chain, the AVR, the manual regulators, and the deceptively simple rule that decides what the bridge actually fires on.
An entire section is devoted toprotection and limiting - overexcitation, underexcitation, stator current limiting, volts-per-hertz, loss of excitation, and power system stabilization - explained in terms of what each one is protecting and where it acts on the generator capability curve, not just as a list of setpoints.
The final third is hands-on. You will learn thetouchscreen operator interface screen by screen, work throughpreventive maintenance and parts replacement - including which components can be changed with the machine running and which demand a shutdown - and finish with a structuredtroubleshooting methodology built around real alarms, real diagnostic screens, and real field photographs.
Everything in this course comes from GE technical documentation and field experience on live units. No generic theory, no stock imagery - actual HMI screens, actual cabinets, actual failures.
Whether you operate these machines, maintain them, commission them, or simply want to stop being the person who calls the OEM every time the exciter alarms, this course will give you the working understanding to handle it yourself.
Who this course is for
⭐ Power plant operators and control room personnel who run generators and want to understand what the excitation system is doing behind the AVR raise and lower buttons
⭐ Electrical maintenance technicians responsible for excitation cabinets who want to move beyond board swapping to genuine fault diagnosis.
⭐ Field service and commissioning engineers working on GE gas turbine, steam turbine, or hydro generator packages.
⭐ Electrical and controls engineers in power generation who want a complete picture of static excitation from generator theory through to thyristor firing.
⭐ Engineers transitioning into power generation from other industries, or graduates seeking practical excitation system knowledge not taught in university.
