June Christy was the professional name of the girl singer in Stan Kenton's band in the mid-to-late 40s. She's mostly remembered for "Shoe-fly Pie and Apple Pan-dowdy," which says a lot about the dominance of the novelty song in those days. Personally I prefer her first song, the comedy number "Tampico." After 1950, when Kenton-style jazz got shoved aside by Negro bebop and rockabilly stuff, June Christy stayed on the pop charts mostly as an easy-listening interpreter of pop standards, somewhere between Keely Smith and Doris Day. ~
