A Living Library of Ecclesiastical Latin Prayers

What you'll learn
Read and understand a growing collection of traditional Catholic prayers in Ecclesiastical Latin.
Translate and analyze Catholic prayers using the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax developed throughout the Ecclesiastical Latin series.
Reinforce your understanding of Latin by applying previously learned grammatical principles to authentic prayers and devotional texts.
Recognize the connection between grammar and prayer, using each text as an opportunity to review and deepen your knowledge of Ecclesiastical Latin.
Requirements
Students should have a basic to intermediate understanding of Ecclesiastical Latin and be able to read Latin and recognize basic grammatical forms, including nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and verbs. Familiarity with the Latin case system and basic verb conjugations is recommended. Students do not need to have completed the Ecclesiastical Latin course series to take this course. Each prayer can be studied independently, although students who wish to explore the grammar underlying a particular prayer in greater depth may benefit from the corresponding course in the Ecclesiastical Latin series. A desire to understand and engage with traditional Catholic prayers in their original Latin is recommended.
Description
Ecclesiastical Latin: Catholic Prayers is a growing library of Catholic prayers and devotional and Liturgical texts studied through Ecclesiastical Latin.
Throughout the Ecclesiastical Latin course series, students encounter a prayer or sacred text that brings together the grammatical principles introduced in that course. This Library gathers those culminating texts into one place, allowing students to review, translate, and deepen their understanding of the prayers without necessarily completing the entire sequence.
Each prayer is presented as a Latin reading and translation exercise, with attention to vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and meaning. The goal is not to introduce a new progression of Latin grammar, but to provide an opportunity to apply and reinforce the knowledge developed throughout the series.
The Library will continue to grow. As new prayers and sacred texts are introduced and analyzed in future Ecclesiastical Latin courses, they will be added to this collection. Students can therefore return to the course over time to discover new material and revisit familiar prayers.
For students who want a more thorough explanation of the grammar underlying a particular prayer, the relevant Ecclesiastical Latin course in which that prayer was originally studied can provide the corresponding grammatical instruction and preparation.
Whether used for review, independent study, or continued practice, this Library brings together the prayers that form the textual milestones of the Ecclesiastical Latin series.
Who this course is for
This course is for students of Ecclesiastical Latin who want to deepen their understanding through the study of traditional Catholic prayers. It is particularly suited to students approaching the intermediate level and beyond, but beginners are also welcome. The prayers themselves provide an opportunity to encounter authentic Ecclesiastical Latin while developing familiarity with its vocabulary, grammar, and structure. You do not need to have completed the Ecclesiastical Latin course series. Each prayer can be studied independently, while students who want deeper grammatical instruction can explore the corresponding course in the series. As the series grows, this Library will grow with it, providing an ongoing collection of Catholic prayers for reading, translation, analysis, and practice.
