Apply IMO CSS Code principles to plan, check, calculate, and document safe shipboard cargo securing.
What you'll learn
⚡ Explain how IMO CSS Code principles, ship motions, and cargo properties affect stowage and securing decisions.
⚡ Interpret Cargo Securing Manual terminology, equipment ratings, load paths, and lashing limitations.
⚡ Apply approved ship-specific methods to evaluate sliding, tipping, uplift, and longitudinal restraint.
⚡ Inspect and document cargo securing arrangements, identify defects, and escalate unsafe conditions appropriately.
Requirements
❗ No prior experience required; maritime cargo operations knowledge is helpful but not essential.
❗ Ability to read basic shipboard procedures, cargo information, and simple measurements.
❗ Access to a ship's Cargo Securing Manual is useful for applying the course to a specific vessel.
DescriptionCargo Securing Code: Stowage, Lashing & Maritime Compliance is a practical course for maritime personnel who need to understand and apply the IMO Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code) in daily shipboard operations. Sound cargo securing protects people, the vessel, cargo, and the marine environment by reducing the risk of shifting, sliding, tipping, and damage in transit.
You will build a clear foundation in CSS Code and Cargo Securing Manual terminology, lashing equipment, strength ratings, fixed securing points, dunnage, chocks, and load paths. The course explains how roll, pitch, acceleration, centre of gravity, friction, lashing angles, and cargo characteristics influence the forces an arrangement must resist. It distinguishes equipment ratings and emphasizes checking the limiting component in a complete securing system.
Learning progresses from gathering cargo data and selecting a stowage location to preparing support surfaces, choosing lashing arrangements, and completing pre-departure checks. You will examine approved ship-specific calculation methods and tables for assessing sliding, tipping, uplift, and longitudinal restraint. Practical scenarios cover containers, vehicles, heavy lifts, steel products, deck cargo, and other challenging loads, alongside inspection and escalation decisions.
✨ Plan a practical stowage and lashing arrangement using verified cargo information.
✨ Interpret securing capacities, lashing geometry, and friction assumptions.
✨ Use Cargo Securing Manual procedures to support accept, modify, or escalate decisions.
✨ Inspect, document, and maintain cargo securing arrangements throughout a voyage.
By the end of the course, you will be able to contribute to a repeatable onboard cargo-securing process: plan the work, verify the arrangement, identify warning signs, keep meaningful records, and seek appropriate review when approved limits or available information do not support a safe decision.
Who this course is for
⭐ Deck officers, cadets, and ratings involved in cargo planning, loading, or voyage preparation.
⭐ Shipboard personnel who inspect, fit, maintain, or document cargo securing arrangements.
⭐ Port captains, marine superintendents, and shore-based operations staff seeking practical CSS Code awareness.
⭐ Maritime learners preparing for responsibilities involving stowage, lashing, and cargo safety checks.
