MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch

Take Command of your Machine!

What you'll learn:
How to use navigate your computer using the terminal (i.e. command line interface)
How to execute and stop programs executing in the terminal
How to write scripts to automate tasks that you do on your computer.

Requirements
Students should be comfortable with basic computer usage (executing programs, using a graphical user interface)
Students ideally should have some programming experience or concurrently be learning a first programming language

Description
Overview

In this course you will learn how to use the terminal on your operating system. The terminal environment allows you to take full control over your machine without having to rely on a point-and-click Graphical User Interface (GUI). And you may not believe                                                                                                                                                                                                       me yet, but the Graphical User Interface we are accustomed to is not always the most efficient tool!

Topics you'll learn

Students should take this course if they want to learn:

Basic navigation of your operating system within the terminal

How to use the most common command-line tools on the terminal

How to automate common tasks by writing shell scripts

Why you should take this course?

Learning how to use a terminal will at first challenge your 'mental model' of how you navigate and interact with your machine. However, with this course and some practice, you will be able to work more quickly on the terminal for many common tasks, as well as tasks that you cannot complete with a graphical user interface. There have been times in my professional career where my only option was to work on a terminal to remotely access a machine across the country-luckily I was able to do so. So don't wait any longer-learn a new, valuable, and essential skill for any programmer! Unlock the full potential of your machine!

Who am I?

I have been teaching for over 10 years in universities and as a professor. I have worked in industry in big companies, startups, and as a consultant.
