Siemens PLM Software (formerly CD-adapco) is pleased to announce the availability of Simcenter STAR-CD 2019.1.2 is the latest version of the STAR-CD/es-ice suite, designed to address outstanding issues arising from previous releases and to significantly improve the setting up and running of IC engine cases.

If you are new to CD-adapco products then getting your head around the differences will not be easy. The truth is hidden behind a smoke screen of marketing. adapco has said that its marketing tells you get plus what is coming. Difficult to separate the two at times.
Star-CD has considerably more physics that STAR-CCM+, however STAR-CCM+ can handle about 60% of all the work done by STAR-CD. You will find the differences in the physics at the top end. Star-CD has more combustion models, more multi-phase models, for example. STAR-CCM+ cannot handle moving mesh or coal combustion for example, whereas Star-CD can.
STAR-CCM+ is actually easier to use than Fluent. Star-CD comes with prostar. Only OpenFOAM is harder to get to grips with than prostar.
Your current choice of code depends on what you want to model because some models are only available in Star-CD. However, you can run STAR-CCM+ with a Star-CD license. This makes migration easier.

Graphics SupportThe GUI for pro-STAR, Siemens' advanced pre- and post-processing tool, has been rewritten and now uses the Qt GUI toolkit. The previous Motif-based version has been discontinued. On Linux systems, the command-line-only pro-STAR X-Window system driver (prostar x) continues to remain available. On Windows systems, the X driver has been discontinued.
OpenGL runtime libraries and appropriate hardware are required to run the default OpenGL graphics driver. These runtime libraries are usually available for free on most systems, but are not necessarily part of the default operating system installation.
JavaThe Java runtime environment (JRE) version 1.7.0_75 or newer is required for setting up Detailed Chemistry cases in pro-STAR. Java SDK (Software Development Kit) version 1.7.0_75 or newer is a pre-requisite for running STAR-CCM+, which is invoked during the Xmesh method in es-ice. JDK version 1.7.0_75 is installed automatically along with STAR-CCM+ during the installation of es-ice.
Disk Space RequirementsDisk space requirements vary considerably between STAR-CD ports. Allow between 11GB and 12GB of free disk space for a single-port full installation.
