Learn simulation fidelity, converter modelling, HVDC/MMC, HIL, AI/ML, and validation for modern power systems
What you'll learn
⚡ Understand how to select the right simulation fidelity for different power-system engineering questions.
⚡ Compare Power Flow, RMS, QSTS, EMT, impedance analysis, and HIL/PHIL simulation approaches.
⚡ Develop a practical understanding of converter, GFM/GFL, HVDC/MMC, protection, and DC circuit breaker modelling.
⚡ Learn how AI/ML, HPC, digital twins, validation, and uncertainty can improve modern power-system simulation.
Requirements
❗ Basic knowledge of electrical engineering and power systems is recommended. Familiarity with power electronics, control systems, and simulation concepts is helpful but not essential. No specific software is required.
Description
Learn how to approach power-system simulation with the right level of model fidelity for the engineering question.
Modern power systems are becoming increasingly converter-dominated, with inverter-based resources, grid-forming and grid-following controls, HVDC systems, STATCOMs, battery storage, and power-electronic loads. As these systems evolve, choosing an appropriate simulation approach becomes increasingly important.
This course introduces a practical framework for understanding and applying different power-system simulation paradigms, including Power Flow, RMS/Phasor, QSTS, impedance analysis, electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL/PHIL).
You will explore how to determine what needs to be represented inside component models, including converters, GFM/GFL controls, HVDC/MMC systems, protection, communications, transformers, cables, and DC circuit breakers. A dedicated DC circuit breaker case study demonstrates how EMT simulation can connect component-level analysis with hardware validation.
The course also examines emerging technologies shaping simulation workflows, including AI/ML, high-performance computing, cloud computing, digital twins, and standards-based validation. Particular attention is given to model credibility, uncertainty, computational tractability, and the risk of drawing incorrect conclusions from simulations.
You will also learn how simulation can become a reusable engineering capability through multi-fidelity model libraries, automated scenario execution, validation workflows, HIL-ready models, uncertainty reporting, and practical R&D planning.
By the end of the course, you will have a structured way to think about simulation fidelity-not simply as a choice between simple and detailed models, but as a decision based on the engineering question, relevant dynamics, computational cost, validation Requirements, and decision risk.
This course is particularly relevant to engineers, researchers, postgraduate students, and professionals working with modern power systems, power electronics, converters, HVDC, renewable integration, and advanced simulation.
Who this course is for
⭐ This course is for power-system engineers, electrical engineers, researchers, postgraduate students, and power-electronics professionals who want to understand modern component modelling, simulation fidelity, EMT, HIL, converter behaviour, and practical validation.
